Prejudice and Differences:
- India which has over 1,600 languages and 8 major religions are practised.
- (ii) People with unfamiliar ideology and culture meet us.
- (iii) There is various ground on which difference exist.
- (iv) Due to differences people lead to prejudice. Prejudice meaning is to judging other people in negative way.
Creating Stereotype:
- Boys and Girls are taught to be do different type of tasks.
- This type of tasks made according to the stereotype image.
Discrimination and Inequality:
- When people act on their prejudices or stereotypes discrimination happens.
- There are several reason for the discrimination.
- Groups of people who are speaking a certain language, following a particular religion, living in specific regions, etc. may be discriminated against as the customs or practices may be seen as inferior.
- Social and economic ground can be the basis of discrimination. Due to discrimination based on social and economic ground tribal, some religious groups and even particular religion face discrimination.
On Being Discriminated Against:
- Occupation types are different for people. People have different job having different value considering inferior and superior.
- Due to caste rules were set which did not allow the so called untouchables to take on work, other than what they were meant to do decided by the society considering the inferior work to specified caste.
- Discrimination was suffered when Dr Ambedkar was only of nine years in school.
- Dr Ambedkar emerged as the pioneer of rights of Dalits and he believed the Dalits must fight against caste system.
Striving for Equality:
- Equality was strived in the struggle for freedom against British rule.
- For the ending of inequality Dalits, women, tribals and peasants have fought for long.
- Framers of the Indian Constitution aimed for ending inequality.
- People practised freedom to follow their religion, speak their language, celebrate their festivals and expose themselves freely.
- India became a secular state to guarantee equality

Question 2. How can the stereotype that girls are a burden on their parents affect the life of a daughter? Imagine this situation and list at least five different effects that this stereotype can have on the way daughters get treated in the house.
Answer:
The stereotype that girls are a burden on their parents affect the life of a daughter in negative
ways and crush their dreams and ambition. It creates feeling of being inferior from other.
Five different effects:
a. They are not given quality education and in some extreme cases not sent to schools.
b. Their nutrition demands are not meet in most cases.
c. They have to do household work and remain busy in this.
d. They are restricted to go out with their friends and be socialised.
e. They are looked after unaffectionly.
f. Their mental and physical health are less cared.
Question 3. What does the Constitution say with regard to equality? Why do you think
it is important for all people to be equal?
Answer:
a. The constitution says the following point regarded to equality:
b. People are free to choose any kind of work.
c. Everyone has equal right and opportunity in every sphere.
d. Everyone are free to apply and compete for government jobs.
e. There is right of equality for poor and marginalised communities.
f. Untouchability is legally abolished by law.
g. It is necessary for people to have right of equality to celebrate festival, practice
religions and faith.
Question 4. Sometimes people make prejudiced comments in our presence. We are often
not in a position to do anything about this because it is difficult to say something right
then and there. Divide the class into groups and each group discuss what they could do
in one of the following situations:
a. A friend begins to tease a classmate because he is poor.
b. You are watching TV with your family and one of them makes a prejudicial
comment about a particular religious community.
c. Children in your class refuse to share their food with a particular person because
they think she is dirty.
d. Someone tells you a joke that makes fun of a community because of their accent.
e. Some boys make remarks about girls not being able to play games as well as
them.
Discuss in class what the different groups have suggested for the above situations, and
also talk about the problems that can come up when raising the issue.
Answer
Students should make five group and discuss the issues among themselves.
a. A friend begins to tease a classmate because he is poor.
• We should respect the personality of the individual his poor back ground means he will
undergo lot of pressure not similar to our upbringing we should help him mentally and
increase his confidence and knowledge for the future.
b. You are watching TV with your family and one of them makes a prejudicial comment
about a particular religious community.
• Every religious community have different ways of life which can generate lot of prejudices
but at the last we are human we have human value we should connect and say he is a human
and has equal rights.
c. Children in your class refuse to share their food with a particular person because they think
she is dirty.
• If she is dirty she should wash. But if it is just a opinion then we should share the food.
d. Someone tells you a joke that makes fun of a community because of their accent.
• we should tell accent may be unique to the community and similar the person speaking of
the community will have a different accent despite of laughing on someone we should mix
and do something which enhances the lifes of both community.
e. Some boys make remarks about girls not being able to play games as well as them.
• It is not true we should tell them history of girl oppression and rise of their talents in
different field even in sports and assure then in coming 10 years they will be equal if we keep
on cheering and supporting.
